Regimen

Bustin’ Buns

In my marathon training, I’ve followed an 18-week program laid out in the book Hansons’ Marathon Method. Although I’m only a slightly-better-than-mediocre runner, I’ve always improved myself by following that plan. What’s more, I’ve actually enjoyed the process of training. A couple years ago I was in a rut with my writing process, so I adapted my marathon training program into a writing regimen.

Since then, I’ve shared my writing regimen with others, who have adapted it to their own needs. For me, the creative process is best measured in time spent in solitude and concentration. Others have word-count goals, but I try and measure the time I’m at my desk, wearing ear plugs, with my wi-fi turned off. I’m a process guy. Following this regimen has taken the guesswork out of my creative activity: I commit to the work, try my best, and accept whatever results may come. Here I share my regimen in case you find it useful to your own creative pursuits.
